Uninventable Art

There is a new Korean church that has finally opened around the corner from where I live. I've seen it under construction--a modern, sleek design--and glanced into the lobby yesterday as I walked the dog. I was curious as to how the Jesus was rendered, but I became completely distracted by these cartoon figures around him.  Who the hell are Squeaky, Max and Fizz, and why are they of such importance as to surround the sine qua non of the congregation's very existence? (I can't read Korean..Maybe they are the Church of the Immaculate Floor? It did look very clean.)  I realize none of you will be able to answer this question, but I had to ask it.  I particularly enjoy how the most uninventable art will appear in life if you just keep an eye out for it. Vive le cameraphone.

Yesterday I went to a very boring July 4th barbecue.  Hint to Hosts: When you are the only link between a disparate group coming to your house, make an effort to introduce your guests to each other as they arrive, perhaps pointing out commonalities between two people only you know to get things going.  Otherwise, it can take 2 hours of small talk with 6 people you don't know to finally find someone with whom you have an affinity, by the time you get to that point you're psychologically exhausted. It's not like the old days, where everyone got lubricated within the first hour.  Times have changed.  Even drinkers watch their drinking these days, at least at Southern California barbecues.

Now I'm watching Wimbledon.  I must wonder if the Williams sisters play each other for "fun" anymore. Can you imagine what happens when there's a disputed call?  "It was out, Venus!"  "It was IN, Serena."  "OUT!" "IN!"

"MOM!"

Welcome to any new readers from Sam's vlog. Give me a week. If you're not satisfied, I'll come and pick up trash on your block for a day.

You know that there's nothing that I enjoy better than doing research, any research, no matter how trivial or silly. I had to know what Max, Fizz, and Squeaky were doing on the church wall, aligned with Jesus. Figuring that they were not likely to be some new age representation of the Holy Trinity, I did a Google search. Apparently, they are part of something called Power Lab: Groups Discovering Jesus' Miraculous Power and it's the big thing in Vacation Bible School this year. Along with Dewd, Sparki, and Electra, Max, Fizz, and Squeaky are Bible Buddies! Squeaky does a special show called Squeaky beakers for the pre-school set.

I had to know!

On another note, I totally agree about the July 4th party etiquette. I was invited to attend a party hosted by my neighbors whom I don't know well. However, as I had no other plans I went. Sounds as if we had a similar experience. We should write a party etiquette blog.
